Kolkata Knight Riders

When Shahrukh Khan - India's biggest movie star - co-purchased the Kolkata Knight Riders franchise, the nation couldn't help but feel an affinity with the side. And when Brendon McCullum stormed into the competition with a whirlwind 158*, it drew a collective gasp of admiration from fans of the sport across the world. If Sourav helmed the side, then there was John Buchanan who powered the think-tank. But the team could not live up to expectations.

In the second season, suggestions of a multiple-captain approach drew a lot of debate but as it turned out, McCullum ended up leading the side throughout. But the side’s prospects did not improve. KKR ended the tournament pretty close to the bottom of the table. Ricky Ponting and Morne van Wyk have been bought out ahead of Season 2010, while Shane Bond has been bought at USD 750,000. U-19 player Harpreet Singh has also been picke
d for the tournament.

COCHING

Dav Whatmore, born 16th March 1954, took over the coaching reins of Kolkata Knight Riders for IPL 2010. With a vast international experience, and a resume which includes an impressive World Cup victory with Sri Lanka in 1996, Davenell Frederick Whatmore brings with him a track record of coaching teams to glory. Apart from the World Cup win, Dav also coached Bangladesh to their first test victory, their victory against the then top-ranked Australia, against South Africa, and finally against India in a World Cup Super 8 stage. He also coached Lancashire to win the National League twice and the NatWest Trophy in 1998.

The sultan of swing is with us this season, as a mentor to the bowlers of Kolkata Knight Riders. One of the few bowlers the world has ever known who could swing the ball both ways, Wasim Akram is perhaps best known as one of the pioneers of reverse swing.

Born on June 3, 1966, this 43 year old left arm legend has the distinction of being in the ICC Hall of Fame, and in the dream team of all times. With Wasim helping us out, our pacers like Ishant Sharma and Ashok Dinda are sure to rely on his know-how every time they pick the ball.
